Learner Resources

Learner Driver Resources

Use these trusted learning resources alongside your driving lessons to revise road rules, signs and practical-test knowledge. Official GOV.UK materials are listed first and are free to use.

From provisional licence to test day

Follow these resources in order, or go straight to the stage you need. Each official service is clearly labelled so you know who provides it.

Official DVLA service on GOV.UK

Apply for a provisional licence

You need a provisional driving licence before you can take lessons or practise in a car. Use the official DVLA service to check eligibility, what identification you need and how to apply.

Official GOV.UK guidance

Read The Highway Code

The Highway Code explains the rules, guidance and advice all road users should know. Use the current official online version while learning and when revising for your theory test.

Official DVSA service on GOV.UK

Book your theory test

Book both parts of the car theory test—the multiple-choice questions and hazard perception—through the official service. You will need your UK driving licence number and payment details.

Official DVSA practice on GOV.UK

Practise theory and hazard perception

Try free official practice questions and hazard-perception clips to understand how both parts work. Practice questions and clips are examples rather than those used in the real test.

How to prepare for your theory test

Read ALD’s complete guide to targeted revision, multiple-choice strategy and hazard perception.

Official GOV.UK guidance

Check what happens during the test

Learn about the eyesight check, vehicle-safety questions, general and independent driving, and reversing exercise before test day. This can help make the test format feel familiar.

Practise Show Me, Tell Me questions

Use ALD Driving School’s free revision quiz to practise all 21 vehicle-safety questions in full, tell-me or show-me mode, then review any mistakes.

Official GOV.UK guidance

Prepare for test day

Check what you must take, which licence documents are accepted and the rules for the car used in your test. Missing the required items can mean the test is cancelled.

Report and replace a lost licence

Use the official DVLA replacement service if your licence is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. If your test is approaching, allow time for the replacement to arrive and rearrange if necessary.

More Highway Code study resources

Use the official traffic-sign guide alongside The Highway Code. The audio option is a clearly labelled third-party study aid rather than an official DVSA resource.

Listen to The Highway Code

Prefer listening? This third-party audio playlist provides an alternative way to study The Highway Code. Always check the current official Highway Code on GOV.UK because rules and guidance can change.
