Starting driving lessons
Does ALD offer manual or automatic driving lessons?
ALD currently provides manual driving lessons in a fully insured, dual-controlled tuition vehicle. Automatic driving lessons are not currently available. If you are unsure whether manual tuition is suitable for you, contact us before booking and we can discuss your circumstances.
Do you teach complete beginners?
Yes. Learner driving lessons are available for complete beginners as well as learners who already have driving experience. Complete beginners start with the cockpit drill, vehicle controls, moving off and stopping in a suitable quiet area before progressing at a pace appropriate to their confidence and ability. Read what happens on your first driving lesson.
Do you teach nervous learners?
Yes. Lessons are delivered one-to-one and adapted to the learner’s confidence, experience and progress. There is no expectation that every learner develops at the same speed. Sessions use clear goals, explanations, guided practice and constructive feedback to build confidence progressively. Find out more about nervous learner driving lessons.
What do I need before my first driving lesson?
You must hold a valid provisional driving licence and be legally entitled to drive the vehicle. ALD may ask for a DVLA licence check code before tuition begins. You must also meet the legal eyesight standard and should bring any glasses or contact lenses required for driving. Wear suitable footwear that allows you to operate the pedals safely.
How long is a driving lesson?
Lessons are normally provided in two-hour sessions unless another duration is agreed in advance. Two-hour lessons provide enough time for a briefing, meaningful practical driving, focused practice and a proper review without rushing the session.
How many driving lessons will I need?
There is no fixed number because previous experience, confidence, lesson frequency, private practice and individual learning needs all make a difference. Progress is reviewed throughout your training, and Paul will give honest feedback about the areas you have mastered and what still needs development. ALD cannot guarantee that somebody will reach test standard within a particular number of hours.
Where can my lesson start and finish?
Lessons can normally start from your home, workplace, school, college or another agreed location within the areas covered. A different finishing point can also be requested, but it must be agreed in advance because travelling between locations may affect the available lesson time.
Prices, bookings and cancellations
How much do driving lessons cost?
Current lesson packages are: two hours for £76, five hours for £185, ten hours for £360, twenty hours for £700 and thirty hours for £1,000. The five, ten, twenty and thirty-hour options are discounted prepaid packages. Check the Prices page for the latest published information before booking.
What is included in the lesson price?
The price includes professional one-to-one tuition with a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor, collection and drop-off at an agreed location within the areas covered, use of a fully insured dual-controlled manual tuition car, structured lesson planning, progress tracking and constructive feedback.
Can I book a block of driving lessons?
Yes. ALD offers discounted prepaid packages of five, ten, twenty and thirty hours. Credit belongs to the named pupil and is used as lessons are completed. Refunds of legitimate unused credit are handled in accordance with the Terms of Business, after any lessons, valid cancellation charges or other amounts properly due have been deducted.
Do you offer intensive or crash-course driving lessons?
A concentrated programme of lessons may be possible, depending on Paul’s diary, your current ability and how many hours you require. ALD does not promise that every learner can become test-ready within a fixed number of days or guarantee a test pass. Contact us with your experience, preferred timescale and any test already booked so we can advise honestly about what may be achievable.
How do I book driving lessons?
Complete the website enquiry form or contact ALD by WhatsApp or telephone. Tell us your experience, preferred lesson days and times, full collection address and postcode. We will then confirm whether your location and availability can be accommodated. Sending an enquiry does not create a confirmed booking until the arrangements have been agreed.
When do lessons need to be paid for?
Unless a different arrangement has been agreed, lesson fees must be paid in advance or no later than the start of the lesson. Discounted lesson packages are prepaid. Any payment arrangements will be confirmed before tuition is provided.
What is ALD’s cancellation policy?
At least 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or rearrange a lesson. With less than 48 hours’ notice, the full booked fee is normally payable and prepaid hours may be deducted. If ALD fills the whole cancelled slot with another paying pupil, the cancellation charge will be refunded or credited. Please read the full Terms of Business because exceptions and statutory rights may apply.
What happens if I am late for my lesson?
You should be ready at the agreed collection point at the booked start time. If the instructor has arrived and you are not ready, they will normally wait for up to 15 minutes. Pupil-caused lost time is not normally added to the end of the lesson, and the full lesson fee remains payable.
Driving tests and test preparation
Which driving test centres does ALD cover?
ALD provides driving test preparation for Bredbury and Chadderton test centres. Training may include relevant local roads and the types of conditions pupils could encounter, but official test routes can change and no instructor can guarantee the route used by the examiner.
Does ALD provide mock driving tests?
Yes. For pupils approaching test standard, ALD can provide mock tests using DVSA-style marking, independent driving, manoeuvres and realistic test conditions. The results are used to identify weaknesses and create a focused action plan before the practical test. See driving test preparation for what these sessions cover, and try our DVSA show me, tell me practice quiz to revise the vehicle safety questions.
Will ALD book my theory or practical driving test?
No. Pupils must book and manage their own theory and practical driving tests through the official GOV.UK services — book a theory test and book a practical driving test (both official GOV.UK services). Discuss a proposed practical test date, time and test centre with Paul before booking so instructor and vehicle availability can be checked.
Can I use the ALD tuition car for my practical test?
Possibly, but booking a practical test does not automatically reserve or guarantee use of the ALD car. Use of the vehicle must be agreed with Paul and depends on instructor and vehicle availability, an acceptable test centre and time, payment of the agreed fees, and the pupil demonstrating a safe and appropriate test standard. See use of the tuition vehicle for a driving test in the Terms of Business.
Does ALD guarantee that I will pass my driving test?
No. The result is decided independently by the DVSA examiner and depends on the pupil’s performance on the day. ALD provides structured preparation, honest feedback and focused training to help pupils develop the standard required for safe, independent driving.
Should I wait until I pass my theory test before taking lessons?
No. You can begin practical driving lessons before passing the theory test, provided you hold the correct provisional licence and are legally entitled to drive. Studying the Highway Code and preparing for the theory test alongside practical lessons can help you connect road knowledge with real driving situations. Our theory-test and hazard-perception guide explains how to organise your revision.
Other driver training
Can learner drivers have motorway lessons?
Yes. Learner drivers can drive on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales when accompanied by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car displaying L plates. Motorway tuition is voluntary and will only be introduced when the instructor considers it safe and suitable for the learner.
Do you offer motorway lessons for full licence holders?
Yes. Motorway tuition is available to full licence holders who want more confidence with joining, leaving, lane discipline, overtaking, smart motorway signs, variable speed limits, emergency areas and higher-speed driving. Paul’s former HGV Class 1 experience provides additional insight into planning ahead and sharing motorways safely with large vehicles.
Do you provide refresher driving lessons?
Yes. Refresher driving lessons are available for full licence holders returning to driving after a break, nervous drivers and people who want support with specific areas such as roundabouts, parking, town driving or motorways. Training begins at an appropriate level and is adapted to your goals.
Do you provide car and trailer or caravan towing training?
Yes. ALD offers individually arranged car-and-trailer and caravan towing training. Sessions can cover coupling, safety checks, towing weights, positioning, wider turns, braking distances, reversing, manoeuvring and driving on faster roads. Contact ALD before booking so the towing vehicle, trailer or caravan and the driver’s licence entitlement can be discussed.
Can I take lessons in my own vehicle?
Tuition in a pupil’s own vehicle may be possible if agreed in advance. The vehicle must be suitable, roadworthy, correctly taxed and MOT-tested where required, display legal L plates where applicable, and be insured for the pupil to drive and for paid professional driving instruction. ALD may request evidence and can refuse an unsuitable or unsafe vehicle. See lessons in the pupil’s own vehicle in the Terms of Business.
Safety and lesson arrangements
Is the tuition vehicle fitted with dual controls?
Yes. ALD provides a properly insured manual tuition vehicle fitted with dual controls. The instructor may use the dual controls, give verbal directions or take other proportionate action whenever reasonably necessary to protect the pupil, other road users or property.
Does the tuition car use dash cameras?
The tuition vehicle may use front and rear road-facing dash cameras for safety, security, insurance and evidential purposes. Audio is not recorded. Footage is normally overwritten automatically unless it must be retained for an incident, complaint, insurance matter, legal claim or legal obligation. Further information is available in the Privacy Policy.
What happens if the instructor arrives late?
The booked start time includes a flexible window. Paul may offer to begin up to 15 minutes early or may arrive up to 15 minutes after the booked time. An early start only happens if you agree, and the full paid lesson duration will still be provided. If the expected delay exceeds 15 minutes, you will be contacted as soon as safely practicable.
Can somebody under 18 book lessons?
Learners under 18 can receive tuition if they are legally entitled to drive. A parent or legal guardian must accept the Terms of Business and will be responsible for payments and cancellation charges. The learner must still provide the required licence information and meet the legal eyesight standard.
What if my question is not answered here?
Contact ALD with your question, collection postcode, driving experience and preferred availability. WhatsApp is normally the quickest way to make an enquiry while lessons are operating.
